For All: Chocolate, Lemonade, and the Party
In
celebration of its 10th anniversary, the Suwon Museum of Art proudly presents For
All: Chocolate, Lemonade,
and the Party. This exhibition transcends the rigidity of
traditional museum models by creating an open space that reflects the voices
and experiences of people from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds. Our goal is
to provide an exhibition experience that everyone can enjoy with ease.
How
does a museum feel to you? For some, it might be an exciting and engaging
space; for others, it may feel unfamiliar and challenging. The many rules and
restrictions in museums sometimes cause unintended discomfort. Implicit norms
between displayed artworks and visitors, the complexity of contemporary art and
its often confusing explanations, and the hierarchical layout of exhibition
spaces can all create a sense of distance. Moreover, museums can be difficult
to access for those with limited mobility. Such experiences have long hindered
the creation of truly inclusive museum spaces.
This
exhibition has been carefully curated to explore how museums can overcome these
issues and create environments that truly welcome everyone. It is time for
museums to replace exclusion, solemnity, rigidity, and obscurity with joy and
creative experiences. Here, we hope that visitors from all walks of life will
feel at home, enjoy art in a playful way, and share in the joy. By dismantling
traditional notions of authority and fostering understanding and respect for
diverse perspectives, we aim to transform the museum into a democratic space
where art serves as a medium for inclusion.
The
words “chocolate,” “lemonade,” and “party” in the title carry symbolic
meanings. The exhibition weaves together the values the museum aspires to
embody, using these metaphors. Once a precious drink made from cacao, known as
the “fruit of the gods,” chocolate has now become a popular treat that anyone
can enjoy. Similarly, the museum has evolved from an exclusive space for a
select few into a participatory space accessible to all. In this way,
“chocolate” symbolizes the museum’s journey toward becoming a place open to
everyone. Inspired by the saying, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” the
element of lemonade represents the ability to overcome trials and
hardships—symbolized by lemons—and rise above discrimination against the
socially disadvantaged. Party signifies a space where people, each with their
own unique traits, come together to converse, actively engage in museum
activities, and share their experiences. It embodies the Suwon Museum of Art’s
commitment to inviting and welcoming everyone to join the celebration.
Beyond
simply exhibiting artworks or promoting inclusivity, this exhibition redefines
the museum’s role as a space that fosters mutual understanding. Participating
artists engage visitors through various media—including sculpture, video,
installation, performance, and textiles—while accompanying workshops and programs
aim to broaden cultural experiences. As you stroll through the exhibition with a
light heart, you may discover connections with diverse lives. We look forward
to welcoming you as we celebrate differences, communicate openly, and share new
experiences through art.
