Olivier Debré: Mindscape

The Suwon Museum of Art (SUMA), in cooperation with the Centre de Création Contemporaine Olivier Debré (CCC OD), presents Olivier Debré: Mindscape, an exhibition highlighting the oeuvre of French abstract painter Olivier Debré (19201999). Covering the artist’s over 60-year-long career, this exhibition delineates his artistic journey through some 70 featured works alongside archival videos and photographs from his early years to the 1990s.

The exhibition is largely divided into three parts. Section 1, From Encounter to Abstraction, introduces Debré’s relatively under-recognized early works. The experimental works reflecting his early experiences offer an insight into the origin of his artistic reflection. Section 2, Formulation of the Mindscape, focuses on works produced between the late 1950s and the 1990sthe artist’s prime years. During this period, the range of his pictorial practice and color scheme expanded to shape his authentic mode of expression. Works from this period are marked by unique techniques that would yield rectangular brushstrokes and delicate, translucent layers of paint. His expressions also gained depth during this period, beginning with the large stage curtain produced for the Comédie-Française in 1987. Section 3, Travel of Prism, highlights works produced by the curious artist on his trips to different regions that capture internalized images of local landscapes and atmospheres. Also featured in this section is Debré’s more advanced scenography work, including Signes (1997), produced in collaboration with contemporary dancer Carolyn Carlson. Debré’s brushwork sported on the stage and costumes, along with the main dancer’s hand gestures, beckon visitors into the gallery.

Rather than figuratively representing landscapes as they are, Debré sought to convey nature’s profound resonance as synesthetically imprinted in his mind through colors and compositions. Blurring the boundaries between art genres, his paintings expanded into the realms of other media to eventually occupy space as sculptures or installations. In the process, figurative forms derived from actual landscapes disappeared from the canvas, leaving behind internalized emotions and senses of space. This exhibition, intended to encourage a full immersion in Debré’s life and work, will be an opportunity for viewers to reaffirm his artistic mastery.
